Packing the esophageal flange in the gel capsule

The esophageal flange has to be folded forward and packed in a gel capsule so it can be pushed into the esophagus. There are two ways of packing the flange in the gel capsule:

a) By the insertion system (Blom-Singer® Gel Cap Loading System)

Placement of the esophageal flange using the insertion, or loading, system is the old option. It is being used less frequently because it is more time consuming than folding by hand.

That is why the retaining tape of the prosthesis is fed into the sharp-edged opening and used to pull the prosthesis through the plate.

When the esophageal flange is at the opening in the plate, the flange is opened out slightly using a finger to make it slide into the opening more readily.

To pack the voice prosthesis by hand, the esophageal flange of the prosthesis is folded precisely, once, in the middle. The folded flange is now folded again and held in this twice-folded position. The prosthesis, gloves and gel capsule must be dry, as otherwise the gel capsule could dissolve or stick.

The twice-folded esophageal flange is now pushed as far as possible into a gel capsule.

Any protruding bits can be pushed carefully into the gel capsule using the flange insertion tool. Sharp-edged or pointed instruments must not be used for this purpose, as there is a risk of damage to the prosthesis.
