Shower protector

The shower protector prevents water from entering the tracheostoma in the shower. It has a 22-mm connector, and can be placed on a tracheostoma plaster or well-fitting tracheostoma button. It is not recommended to use a shower protector with a tracheostomy tube, as they rarely seal well enough to safely prevent water from entering the wind pipe. The shower protector is available from various manufacturers, all with minor design modifications. Some of them are shown here.

Provox® ShowerAid The ShowerAid has a 22-mm connector, and is placed on the tracheostoma when the patient wishes to shower. If a tracheostoma plaster is used, then the manufacturer recommends using a “Regular” or “FlexiDerm” plaster. Less adhesive plasters may work loose and allow water to enter the wind pipe.
Blom-Singer® Shower Guard The Shower Guard also has a 22-mm connector, and is placed on the tracheostoma when the patient wishes to shower.
Shower collar As an alternative to the above shower options that only work with a 22-mm connector and usually on a tracheostoma plaster, shower collars are available for patients who are unable to wear a tracheostoma plaster, for instance whilst undergoing radiation treatment. Shower collars must be attached as closely as possible to the neck by the collar. They are made of textile material or rubber.
